Types of Survey:
We
offer several types of survey, ranging from the full
pre-purchase survey through to insurance and damage
surveys. In addition we also carry out full engine examinations
plus our specially tailored multi boat package.

Pre purchase surveys:
These are carried out in order to establish the true
condition of any vessel. A pre-purchase survey will
highlight defects within the structure and list any
cosmetic work required. In addition our marine surveyors
will give advice about the appropriate course of action
for any repair work required and supply a valuation.
Insurance surveys: Many insurers
require a survey before issuing a policy. A pre-purchase
survey will normally cover this requirement. There are
however, situations where an insurance survey will be
more appropriate, for example, as a boat ages, the insurance
company may require periodic surveys. This survey is
will establish the safety and seaworthiness of any vessel
prior to underwriting.
Damage Surveys: These are usually
commissioned by an insurance company after an incident.
An insurance company will wish to know that the vessel
can be repaired within its market value. The survey
will identify the type and extent of the damage, the
cost of any repairs and a schedule of works to be carried
out.
Engine inspections: A external visual
examination is carried out which will identify any patent
defects. Marine Techniques also have specialist marine
engineers who can investigate any suspect internal components.
Three boat package: It is usual to
consider more then one vessel at the initial stage of
the buying process. Marine Techniques offers a discounted
three boat inspection package. A preliminary inspection
is carried out on three boats that are being considered
by the purchaser.
Viewings: If you are some distance
away from the boat you are considering, our marine surveyors
can inspect the boat on your behalf. This is a preliminary
inspection and the cost of it will be deducted from
the pre-purchase survey fee if a full survey is later
done on the boat.
Winter layup: An end of season schedule
of work will be compiled which will include winterization
of the engines and checking of the safety equipment
and a report on the findings.
Pre launch checks: These can be carried
out the start of the sailing season approaches. to establish
the overall condition of a vessel and her safety and
highlight any defects that may require attention prior
to launch.
Sea Trials: These are more common
for powerboats but sailing yachts also sometimes have
sea trials. Engines are run over a length of time under
load, All instrumentation and fittings are tested for
functionality and wear.
Tonnage Surveys: A Tonnage survey is
required if a yacht is to be placed on Part I of the
Register of Shipping. Part I registration is frequently
required by finance companies when a marine mortgage
is taken out. The tonnage survey provides the official
measurements of the vessel for the Register. A tonnage
measurement must be authorised by a governing body such
as the YDSA, or IIMS.

Marine Surveyors
- Fishguard, Wales |
The port of Fishguard originally
opened in 1906 with ferry services between Fishguard
and Rosslare. Today it is a very busy port with
the ferry terminal being operated by Stena Line
with daily crossings to the Republic of Ireland
by the standard ferry or the fast Stena Lynx from
May to September. Fishguard Harbour is the main
sailing centre for North Pembrokeshire. There
are plans for a marina, but this is not yet built.

The Neyland Yacht Haven is situated in a
well protected inlet adjacent to the town of Neyland
some ten miles from the entrance of the deep but
sheltered waters of Milford Haven in South Wales.
With an unrivaled location offers some of the
finest facilities anywhere in South Wales. Neyland
Yacht Haven has 420 berths and can accommodate
vessels up to 20 meter’s LOA and with draught
up to 2m.

Milford Haven is situated near the mouth
of the River Cleddau, at the extreme end of south
west Wales, and is the largest town in the County.
It is also the largest port in Wales and the sixth
largest in the UK. The Milford Haven Waterway
is a unique deep water facility and is one of
the world's great natural deep water harbours
The port handles a variety of cargo including
crude oil, refined products, LPG, LNG as well
as general cargo shipments, fishing traffic and
the twice daily Irish Ferries service between
Pembroke Dock and Rosslare. Milford Haven is arguably
is the largest energy port in northern Europe,
handling just under 53 million gross tons of shipping
in 2008 and over 3000 shipping movement.
Milford
Marina has 360 berths in a non-tidal basin
with superb shelter. Winter lift-out and storage
is available for vessels up to 16 tons.
Near the entrance to Milford Haven is Dale,
where Dale
Sailing has boatyard and storage facilities,
plus moorings.
Up river are Rudders
Boatyard, a picturesque, family run boatyard
and harbour in Burton on the Milford Haven. Rudders
has a trailer boat store & launching service,
60 deepwater-swinging moorings for craft up to
50 ft plus some semi-drying moorings. Facilities
include a deepwater landing pontoon, all tide
access slipway, water taxi service, emergency
recovery, leaning posts, quay wall, lifting to
10 tons, and storage ashore. Nearby is Lawrenny
Yacht Station, which has pontoon berths but no
boatyard facilities |

Swansea
marina is situated within a redeveloped area
of the city in an award winning Maritime Quarter.
Being located along the famous Gower coastline
there is much for the sailor to enjoy. Swansea
Marina has lifting facilities with access to a
25 ton Marine Travel Hoist. In addition there
is also a crane facility available for masts etc.
Within Swansea Marina there are various marine
related businesses that will undertake hull, GRP,
wood, engineering and electrical repairs.

Burry
Port Marina, in the old dock at Burry Port
in Carmarthen Bay, is the newest marina in Wales
with berths for vessels of between six and 12
metres. The marina has been dredged to a depth
of approximately 1.5 metres and, therefore, can
only accommodate boats with draughts up to that
depth. Water levels within the marina are controlled
by an automatic tidal flap gate. As a result,
open access to the sea is limited to approximately
two to two and a half hours either side of high
water. |

The Cardiff Bay Barrage has transformed the
boating environment of the area, allowing all-tide
access to 500 acres of a man-made freshwater lake,
with lock-controlled access to the open tidal
waters of the Bristol Channel.
Cardiff
Marina is well situated to give the yachtsman
a safe and secure mooring facility. The marina
makes an ideal base for exploring the local coastline
or planning trips further afield
Cardiff Bay is an attractive and approachable
environment for boat users of all standards. Cardiff
marina has lifting facilities up to 20 tonnes,
and dry stack storage for small powerboats.
Penarth
Marina is also within the Barrage, and has
340 pontoon berths, although it does not have
boatyard facilities.

Because of the extreme tidal range, there
are few large-scale mooring facilities further
up the Severn than Cardiff/Penarth and Portishead,
with the exception of Bristol Docks.
Gloucester
Docks has been redeveloped with housing, and
is seeing an increase in marine activity, it however
remains more used by inland
waterways based vessels from the Sharpness
canal than seagoing ones. |

Bristol Docks has been largely transformed
from a working dockyard, to a leisure and housing
site, with extensive mooring facilities for small
craft. Bristol
marina has full boat lift out facilities and
a boat yard where owners may build or work on
their own vessels. Bristol Marina has a capacity
of 100 pontoon berths and 70 shore berths for
canal boats river boats and sea going vessels
and yachts to a maximum length of 20 meters.
Poole's
Wharf is another residential mooring facility,
with fewer services.
Vessels in Bristol Docks have access to the tidal
waters of the Bristol Channel via the locks at
Cumberland basin, which leads out into the River
Avon |

Portishead
Marina is built in the old working dock, with
access to the sea by lock. Portishead Marina has
# 250 Sheltered and secure pontoon berths 250
pontoon berths, with better than 50% tidal access
via the lock. A full boatyard service is provided,
with lifting facilities up to 35 tonnes by a mobile
hoist. |

Clevedon, Weston-super-Mare, Burnham-on-Sea
and Bridgwater have between them a substantial
number of pleasure craft moored in creeks and
mud berths, but very limited boatyard facilities.

Minehead and Porlock Weir |
Watchet
harbour has been redeveloped into a locked marina,
with 180 berths and lifting facilities to 15 tonnes.
Minehead and Porlock Weir are drying harbours
with limited facilities. Marine Techniques will
be happy to assist or discuss any requirements
